Evening of National Minorities
Bjelovar is a multicultural city where 21 national minorities live out of a total of 22 registered in the entire Republic of Croatia. Among the minorities, the majority of Serbs live in Bjelovar, followed by Roma, Albanians and Czechs, whose Association for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the Czechs in the Republic of Croatia is known as Češka obec and they started the event Evening of National Minorities. It was created in 2007 out of a desire to present to the community the customs, songs, dances, traditional food and other characteristics of the culture and traditions of the minorities living in Bjelovar.
The city of Bjelovar sponsors this event, which is co-financed by the Council for National Minorities of the Republic of Croatia, and it takes place every last weekend in November. It all started with a small event in the Community Centre, and today it is an all-night event that gathers more than a thousand visitors in the Bjelovar School and Sports Hall who come to learn about the customs of national minorities. This event is a unique event in our country, and in addition to the local population, cultural and artistic societies from abroad also participate in it.
