Cemeteries
In Bjelovar-Bilogora County, there are about seventy cemeteries distributed in cities and towns. Most of them are Catholic, but there are also several Orthodox, Evangelical and Jewish cemeteries in the county. Residents of Bjelovar mainly gravitate towards two main cemeteries, namely the “Borik” cemetery and the so-called the old cemetery of Velika Sredica (Catholic and Orthodox).
The memorial cemeteries should be singled out, and among them, the Jewish memorial cemetery in Daruvar’s Roman Forest is the most prominent. The cemetery is located in the eastern part of the Roman Forest, and dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. It contains 160 monuments with marble and stone plates with inscriptions in German and Croatian.
The cemetery grew in the 19th century, especially after the construction of the synagogue in Daruvar in 1860, and in 1973 it was declared a cultural monument to victims of fascist terror.
